If I Could Live my Life Again

I am loving a new (to me) podcast Suggested Donation. It is by youngish artists who are painting using the traditional skills that were taught to 19th century artists. They talk about art and interview other artists. And so far nothing about how to sell or promote your art, thank heavens.

I went to art school in the early 90’s. At that time it was rare to be find anyone teaching the classical skills of painting and drawing.  It is still rare, but now there are Atelier schools that teach drawing from casts and other traditional methods for people who are interested in painting naturalistically.

I have often wished that I had gone to art school immediately after high school rather than going for a liberal arts education at university (the choice my parents decided upon.) I wish I had trusted what I knew from a young age, that I was an artist. Fortunately it isn’t a painful regret, as I spent my young adult years in creative jobs, sign writing, graphic artist, artist model. And then I did go to art school and now have been an artist for over 20 years.

But art takes a long time. And if I could do it again, I would start sooner. I would still study traditional drawing and painting but I would do it for a lot longer than four years. One talented artist, Graydon Parrish, that they interviewed studied under a master for ten years after attending art school. I had that kind of dedication, but not the opportunity. if I could live my life again…
